Waddesdon’s Staff and Volunteers’ Charity of the Year initiative launched at the start of 2018, in which funding from the Rothschild Foundation will be given to a chosen charity, on the basis that staff and volunteers participate in a selection of events and activities to support them throughout the year.

Nominations were opened to all staff and volunteers, and Bucks Young Carers were chosen. This incredible organisation support children and young people in Buckinghamshire who have a caring role, giving them community support to ensure they have the confidence and resources needed to flourish.
So far staff and volunteers have taken part in a mass walk around the Waddesdon Estate, have spent the day volunteering in the gardens, and on Monday 1 October Waddesdon held its very own ‘Great Bake Off’, in which almost 100 cake bakers and eaters gathered around a judging table at the Dairy, including guests from Bucks Young Carers.

Judging was carried out by Waddesdon’s Head Pastry Chef, Craig Clark, to determine the winning bake within each of the five categories: Victoria Sponge, Chocolate Based, Vegetable-based, Waddesdon Inspired and Free From. Interestingly, the most popular category by far, with 12 entries, was ‘vegetable-based’, and saw an assortment of flavours ranging from ‘Pea and Vanilla’ to ‘Parsnip and Coconut’. The ‘Waddesdon Inspired’ category also saw some showstopper creations, based on the artwork and everyday goings-on at Waddesdon (think chandeliers and iconic blue Waddesdon buses!).

It is hoped that the funding offered by the Rothschild Foundation will provide young carers with much-deserved days out and social experiences, to reward them for the incredible work they do every day.
